Indiana Department of Correction

The Indiana Department of Correction, known as IDOC, is the primary state agency responsible for managing the Indiana inmate population. IDOC oversees 18 adult correctional facilities ranging from maximum security prisons to minimum security work camps. It also manages three juvenile facilities through its Division of Youth Services. The department's stated mission is "Changing Lives From the Inside Out," and it runs reentry programs, community corrections, and the Hoosier Initiative for Reentry, which supports formerly incarcerated people with jobs and skills training.

IDOC headquarters is at 302 West Washington Street, Room E-334, Indianapolis, IN 46204. You can reach the main office by phone at (317) 232-5711, Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM Eastern time. For official offender records requests, email coaoffenderrecordrequest@idoc.in.gov. The full list of IDOC services and divisions is on the Indiana Department of Correction website. Staff can help with inmate location, records inquiries, and questions about the Indiana inmate population.

The primary tool to search the Indiana inmate population is the IDOC Offender Locator, available free at offenderlocator.idoc.in.gov. This database lets you search by last name only, by both first and last name, or by DOC offender number. Searching by last name alone may return a long list. When you know both names, use them to narrow results. Any person or agency that republishes data from the offender locator takes full responsibility for its use. Accuracy complaints may be sent in writing to IDOC at 302 West Washington Street, IGCS Room E334, Indianapolis, IN 46204. Under Indiana Code Title 11, the IDOC commissioner has a legal duty to collect and maintain inmate data and to make it useful for correctional purposes.

Marion County operates its own separate inmate lookup portal. The Marion County Adult Detention Center at 695 Justice Way houses an average daily population of nearly 2,500 inmates. Search that system at inmateinfo.indy.gov/IML. You can look up a person by full name and date of birth, booking number, permanent number, state ID, county ID, or FBI/ICE number. This is separate from the IDOC system and covers only people held at Marion County facilities.

County Jail Inmate Population in Indiana

All 92 Indiana counties operate their own jails under the management of each county sheriff. County jails hold people awaiting trial, those serving short sentences, and inmates waiting to transfer to state prison.
